The Second National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has accused Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of avoiding accountability over the government's expenditure on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
He has also called on President John Dramani Mahama to remove Mr Ablakwa from office, citing alleged irregularities in the payment of allowances to evacuees and the cost of chartered flights used for the exercise.
Nana B made the comments at the NPP Youth Wing's ‘Yɛ Gye Yɛ Sika’ demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, November 3, organized by the NPP Youth Wing.
“Okudzeto, who is supposed to be an apostle of accountability, is today running away from the arena of accountability. You yourself presented a whole pack of documents to Parliament. Parliament, after their scrutiny, identified a lot of lapses. The documents you presented were so porous,” he said.
Nana B alleged that some evacuees did not receive the full GH¢5,500 support package announced by the government, while others received lower amounts.
He also claimed that some names appeared multiple times in the payment records, with alleged irregularities involving signatures and beneficiary lists.
The NPP executive further questioned the cost of chartered flights, alleging that some payments exceeded the amount Ghana was expected to pay for the services.
He claimed that one flight cost US$750,000, although, according to his checks, the expected cost was between US$300,000 and US$400,000.
He also raised concerns about the alleged sale of diplomatic and service passports, calling for investigations into the matter.
Nana B said the President should demonstrate stronger leadership by removing Mr Ablakwa and other ministers facing allegations of wrongdoing.
“Why is the President displaying weak leadership? He must be bold. He must be able to fire Okudzeto,” he stated.
