Former boxer Ayitey Powers remanded over alleged death threat to NSA DG, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded in police custody for one week after appearing before the Dansoman Circuit Court over allegations that he threatened to kill National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The 45-year-old appeared before the court on Tuesday, 25 August, a day after his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command. He is due to reappear on 2 September as investigations continue.

The case stems from a video that circulated on social media in which Ayitey Powers was allegedly seen making threats against the NSA chief.

He had reported himself to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters last week after receiving an invitation from investigators. Police subsequently arrested and detained him before processing him for court.

His remand follows calls from the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged threats.

The committee described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and urged the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action.

The GBIMC has also opened disciplinary proceedings against the former boxer, saying the outcome of the case could have implications for his standing within Ghana's boxing fraternity.
