The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a new welfare initiative to provide healthcare support to former national team players facing medical challenges.
GFA president Kurt Okraku unveiled the GFA Foundation Player Welfare Initiative at the association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Under the programme, the GFA will commit $50,000 (£38,000) annually for the next four years to support the healthcare needs of eligible former Ghana internationals.
The initiative represents a total commitment of $200,000 over the four-year period.
Mr Okraku said the scheme was intended to recognise the contribution of former national team players who had represented Ghana with dedication and sacrifice.
“Our former national team players brought immense pride and glory to Ghana through their dedication, sacrifice and service to the nation,” he said.
“Many of them continue to face significant health challenges long after their playing careers have ended, and it is only fitting that the football family stands with them during these difficult moments.”
The GFA Foundation will set aside the annual $50,000 to create a dedicated welfare fund for former internationals requiring medical assistance.
The association said the initiative was part of efforts to strengthen its support for former national team players and honour those who served Ghana during their playing careers.
