Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has assured that the government is prepared to strengthen collaboration with the Africa Road Safety Observatory and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to improve the quality, timeliness and level of detail in Ghana’s road crash data.

Mr Nikpe gave the assurance at the launch of the FIA Safe Helmets Initiative (SAHI) Summit, where he underscored the importance of accurate and reliable data in understanding road crashes and developing effective road safety policies.

The Minister described the SAHI initiative as more than a technical programme, saying it represented a demonstration of solidarity among African countries in addressing the continent’s road safety challenges.

“No African country can solve the problem of road crashes alone,” he said.

Mr Nikpe stressed that achieving the targets of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 and the Sustainable Development Goal 3.6, which seeks to halve road traffic deaths and injuries, would require coordinated action across the continent.

He called for stronger collaboration among transport ministries, standards authorities and road safety agencies to improve interventions aimed at reducing road crashes and protecting vulnerable road users.

The FIA Safe Helmets Initiative is focused on reducing motorcycle-related fatalities by promoting access to certified, affordable and quality helmets for motorcycle riders.
