Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has questioned the increase in airfares between Accra and Kumasi despite improvements in some economic indicators.
According to him, a return air ticket between the two cities now costs between GH¢4,000 and GH¢5,000, compared with about GH¢1,600 to GH¢2,000 in 2024.
In a social media post on Thursday, August 20, the lawmaker said the increase is difficult to reconcile with the current economic conditions, particularly the reported decline in inflation and improved exchange rate.
“In 2024 a return air ticket from Accra-Kumasi was between 1,600-2,000 depending on the peak, even when inflation and other economic conditions were not all that favourable,” Nyarko Osei wrote.
He argued that improved economic conditions should translate into more stable or lower prices for goods and services.
“Today with inflation and exchange rate reasonably down, a return flight to the same destination will cost you between 4,000-5,000. This is crazy and doesn’t make sense,” he said.
Nyarko Osei further questioned whether the increase in airfares reflected the broader economic performance being reported by the government.
He said if the economy is genuinely improving, consumers should begin to see the benefits through stable or reduced prices rather than further increases.
