2026 WAFCON: We need balance in our game against Malawi - Black Queens coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has called for the right balance between defensive solidity and attacking intent when Ghana face Malawi in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana will take on the Scorchers at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, with a place in the semi-finals and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake.

Speaking to the media on Saturday ahead of the crucial encounter, Björkegren stressed that Ghana cannot afford to sit deep throughout the game and must have the confidence to keep possession and make the most of their opportunities.

"We can't just defend with 11 players against Malawi. We need a balance and also to believe in ourselves to keep the ball in the team and convert our chances. We need to play our game," the Swedish trainer said.

The Black Queens booked their place in the last eight after finishing second in Group D, following a 1-1 draw with Mali in their final group game.

Björkegren's side will now be aiming to build on their impressive group-stage campaign as they seek to reach the semi-finals and keep their hopes of winning the continental title alive.

The quarter-final also carries added significance for Ghana, as victory over Malawi would secure the Black Queens' qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2007.

With so much at stake, Ghana will need to combine their attacking quality with defensive discipline, particularly against a Malawi side capable of causing problems in the final third.

The Black Queens will also be looking to maintain their composure and make their chances count as they bid to take another step towards continental glory.

Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 GMT at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
