Prophet Kusi describes Wontumi’s 20-year sentence as harsh

Kumasi-based preacher Prophet Daniel Kusi has criticised the 20-year prison sentence imposed on Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, describing the punishment as excessive in relation to the offence for which he was convicted.

Speaking on AsetsenaPa with Akoto Mansa, Prophet Kusi said although there appeared to be concerns regarding compliance with some legal requirements, he believed the sentence was disproportionate.

“His sentence is too much considering the allegation,” he said.

The preacher also questioned the circumstances surrounding the mining concession at the centre of the case, particularly the allegation that Chairman Wontumi allowed another person to undertake mining activities on land under his control.

“I did not understand the part where he had to give the land to another person to mine on it. Why did he not mine it himself and rather employ workers to work for him?” he asked.

Prophet Kusi further suggested that political considerations may have played a role in the case.

“I also think that the incident is politically motivated,” he added.
