Black Stars: Sports Minister hints at contract extension for Carlos Queiroz

Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has indicated that Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz could be offered a contract extension after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 73-year-old was appointed in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany.

Queiroz has enjoyed a promising start to his tenure with the four-time African champions at the ongoing World Cup, guiding the team to a victory over Panama and a draw against England in their opening two Group L matches.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Adams acknowledged the growing public support for the Portuguese tactician but emphasised that the government's immediate priority is Ghana's World Cup campaign.

“Well, surely it’s something that we will be looking at, and if you listen to many persons across the country, even before the ministry spoke or even the FA said anything, Ghanaians are already giving the indication that we should keep him for some time," he said.

“But let’s finish this project. We have the World Cup project ahead of us.

“Let’s finish this and, like we said before we came here, that when we finish this project, we can then make decisions about the future of anybody," Adams added.

The Black Stars are currently second in Group L, level on four points with England after two matches.

Queiroz and his side will conclude their group-stage campaign against Croatia on Saturday at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with qualification to the knockout stage still at stake.
