Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has reiterated his commitment to supporting the Black Stars, saying he is now ready to fully honour—and potentially increase—his pledged financial backing following the team’s encouraging start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The founder of Engineers and Planners had earlier pledged $5 million to support Ghana’s campaign in North America.
However, after the team’s opening win over Panama and a goalless draw against England, he admitted he had initially delayed the release of the funds as he monitored the team’s performances.
Speaking during a visit to the Black Stars camp in Rhode Island, Mahama said he had been impressed by what he had seen and was now prepared to act swiftly on his promise.
“I’m truly impressed by your performances at the World Cup. I had held back the financial support I promised and even told the Minister [Kofi Adams] that I wouldn’t release the money until I saw strong performances from the team. But after what I’ve seen, I’m eager to rush home and not only fulfil my pledge but increase it as well," he said.
The Black Stars, who are chasing a place in the Round of 32 for the first time since 2010, will conclude their Group L campaign against Croatia on Saturday, June 27, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The team has already arrived in Philadelphia from Rhode Island ahead of the decisive fixture.
