Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for greater attention to be given to workers in the country's informal sector.

She observed that despite their contribution to the economy, many informal sector players remain excluded from national labour discussions and social protection systems.

Speaking at the opening the 2026 Annual National Labour Conference in the Volta Region on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President said the rights, welfare and working conditions of informal sector workers deserve the same level of attention accorded to organised labour.

"While organised labour remains a vital partner in national development, greater attention must also be given to workers in the informal sector, who account for over 70 per cent of Ghana's workforce," she said.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang observed that many informal sector workers lack adequate social protection and often do not have the collective voice and bargaining power available to organised labour.

She said government remains committed to building an inclusive labour environment that addresses the concerns of all workers.

The Vice President also highlighted the government's 24-Hour Economy policy, describing it as a strategic initiative aimed at stimulating economic growth, creating jobs and improving productivity.

"I therefore encouraged employers, organised labour, and the private sector to embrace innovation and flexible working arrangements to support this transformation," she stated.

She urged organised labour to continue promoting productivity, professionalism, innovation and ethical work practices while tackling challenges such as absenteeism, indiscipline and corruption.

According to the Vice President, government, employers and labour all share responsibility for building a productive workforce and advancing national development.
