Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has underlined the importance of victory in his side’s opening fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the clash against Panama as non-negotiable.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Group L encounter, the experienced Portuguese manager said his team must begin their campaign with maximum points as they look to set the tone for the tournament.
“It's a must-win game [against Panama. I don't remember in my life any game I played that wasn't a must-win. Our value is based on results, and the only medicine that works in football is to win,” Carlos Oueiroz told reporters.
The match between Ghana and Panama is set for Wednesday, June 17, kicking off at 23:00 GMT.
Panama enter the fixture chasing a historic milestone, as they continue their search for a first-ever World Cup victory.
The encounter at BMO Field has generated strong anticipation, with Ghana targeting a winning start to their fifth appearance at football’s global showpiece.
After facing Panama, the Black Stars will take on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before wrapping up their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27.
Ghana will be hoping to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their impressive quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
