We're pleased to share that Somali referee Omar Artan will officiate the highly anticipated match between PSG and Aston Villa in Salzburg.
UEFA confirmed that the highly anticipated fixture will be played on August 12 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, with Artan entrusted to oversee one of the most prestigious matches on the European football calendar.
The appointment comes shortly after a major setback for the 34-year-old official, who was unable to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite earning a place among the tournament's selected referees.
Artan, who was set to become the first Somali referee to officiate at a World Cup finals, was reportedly denied entry into the United States upon arrival at Miami International Airport on Monday.
Despite travelling with a diplomatic passport and a valid single-entry US visa, he was turned away and forced to return home, ending his World Cup dream before it began.
However, UEFA's decision to hand him the Super Cup assignment serves as a strong vote of confidence in one of Africa's most respected match officials.
The UEFA Super Cup, which traditionally brings together the winners of Europe's major club competitions, is regarded as one of the continent's showpiece events and attracts global attention. Artan's selection to officiate the contest represents a significant milestone in his rapidly rising career.
Despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup, Artan has continued to receive widespread support from football authorities, colleagues and fans. His latest appointment ensures he will still take charge of one of the biggest matches in world football this year.
The Somali official's reputation has grown significantly in recent years, culminating in him being named CAF Men's Referee of the Year in 2025. He is widely considered one of Africa's elite referees and has regularly handled high-profile continental and international fixtures.
Rather than allowing the World Cup setback to define his year, Artan now has the opportunity to oversee a major European final featuring some of the world's biggest football stars.
After returning to Somalia on Wednesday, Artan received a hero's welcome from supporters and officials, with many celebrating both his achievements and resilience.
His appointment to the UEFA Super Cup now provides a fitting response to a difficult week and further underlines his standing among the game's top referees.
