The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has extended his best wishes to the 10 African countries competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He described their participation as a source of pride and inspiration for the continent.
In a statement dated June 10, the AUC Chairperson said the historic number of African teams at the tournament reflects the increasing strength of football across the continent and the determination of African players.
The statement noted that the World Cup presents an opportunity for Africa to showcase its talent on the global stage while fostering unity among people through sport.
“This record level of African participation reflects the continued rise of African football and the talent, resilience, and determination of its players. It is a moment of continental pride, uniting Africans across all regions in shared hope and celebration,” the statement read in part.
He stressed that football continues to serve as a powerful tool for bringing people together and strengthening bonds among nations.
The AUC Chairperson further described African football as a reflection of the continent’s youthful energy and ambition, noting that the participating teams carry the hopes of millions across Africa.
“Africa’s strength in football reflects the strength of its youth,” he stated, adding that the teams represent not only their respective countries but also the aspirations of an entire generation.
The African Union also commended players, coaches, officials and supporters for their contributions to the success of African football and encouraged the teams to compete with excellence, discipline, integrity and respect for fair play.
Meanwhile, the 48-team tournament is set to kick off with an opening game between Mexico, one of the three host nations, and Mexico at 19 GMT on Thursday, June 11.
