2026 World Cup: Black Stars are determined to make Ghanaians proud despite tiugh group challenge, says Jordan Ayew

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has called for national support ahead of a demanding group-stage campaign, acknowledging the scale of the challenge while insisting the team remains focused on making history for Ghana.

Ghana have been drawn into a difficult Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, a lineup widely regarded as one of the most competitive in the tournament.

Speaking at a send-off event before the squad’s departure to Rhode Island on Wednesday, Ayew struck an optimistic tone despite the tough opposition, urging fans to rally behind the team.

"We have three massive games for us, and we want to make you guys proud, want to make Ghana proud," Ayew said.

"Obviously, it's not going to be easy, but with your prayers and your support, hopefully we'll be successful.

He added that the squad is fully aware of the expectations back home and is motivated to deliver a strong performance.

"We want to thank everyone for your support and keep on praying for us because we're here to make history," the former Leicester City forward said.

Ghana, who are targeting a first knockout-stage appearance since 2010, will open their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17. They will then face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27.
