Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has defended the timing of Carlos Queiroz’s appointment as Ghana head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, 73, was named in April as the new manager of the Black Stars following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a series of poor friendly results against Austria and Germany in March. Addo had previously guided Ghana through qualification for the tournament.

Speaking on TV3, Adams insisted that appointing a coach just months before a major competition is a normal practice in international football and should not be viewed as unusual.

“Choosing a head coach a few months before the tournament is not out of place,” he stated.

The experienced tactician has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage for the first time since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Black Stars will be making their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Ghana begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.
