Somali referee Omar Artan receives hero’s welcome in Mogadishu after US entry denial

Somali international referee Omar Artan was met with a rousing reception on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, upon his return to Mogadishu after being denied entry into the United States.

The 34-year-old, who was crowned Africa’s Referee of the Year in 2025, arrived at Aden Adde International Airport to cheering crowds, with government officials, representatives of the Somali Football Federation, fellow referees, and members of the public all present to welcome him home.

His return follows an incident at Miami International Airport on Monday, June 8, where he was refused entry despite holding a diplomatic passport and a single-entry United States visa. US immigration authorities have not publicly commented on the reasons behind the decision.

The development is understood to have halted what would have been a major career milestone, with Artan widely tipped to become the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup finals.

Somalia is among several countries affected by travel restrictions previously linked to policy measures introduced under former US President Donald Trump.

On arrival in Mogadishu, Artan appeared emotional as he acknowledged the reception and expressed appreciation for the support shown by both fans and football authorities.

He is expected to attend a public event later on Wednesday at Mogadishu Stadium, where he will watch a domestic league fixture between Heegan and Dekadaha.

Despite the setback, Artan struck a defiant tone about his future in the game, insisting he remains committed to officiating at the 2030 FIFA World Cup and continuing his rise on the international stage.
