2026 World Cup: Carlos Queiroz's experience key for Black Stars’ success - Henry Asante Twum

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has expressed confidence that the vast experience of head coach Carlos Queiroz will be instrumental in Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, a former manager of Iran and Egypt and ex-assistant coach at Manchester United, was appointed on a short-term deal following the dismissal of Otto Addo after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany in March.

With the Black Stars struggling for consistency, Asante Twum believes the Portuguese tactician brings the pedigree needed to steady the team ahead of the global tournament.

"We would have loved to have the coach (Otto Addo) who qualified us for the World Cup, but unfortunately, the results were not looking good, and after the search period, we appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new coach for the Black Stars," he told DW TV.

"He is very experienced, and that is what we needed at this moment," he added.

Queiroz oversaw his first match in charge against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Black Stars are currently in the United States continuing preparations for the tournament. Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

The team will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.

Under Queiroz, the four-time African champions will be aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, having exited at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022.
