2026 World Cup: Otto Addo begins FIFA Technical Study Group role ahead of tourney

Former Ghana coach Otto Addo has officially commenced his duties as a member of FIFA's Technical Study Group (TSG) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the only African representative on the prestigious panel.

Addo joins an elite 11-member group tasked with analysing tactical developments, coaching trends and team performances throughout the tournament. The panel also plays a key role in determining the winners of major individual awards at the World Cup.

The FIFA Technical Study Group is responsible for providing comprehensive technical insights during the competition, with its findings contributing to global football development and shaping FIFA's official technical reports.

The former Black Stars coach will work alongside renowned football figures including Tobin Heath of the United States, Germany's Jürgen Klinsmann, Wales' Jayne Ludlow, Northern Ireland's Michael O'Neill, Brazil legend Gilberto Silva, Denmark coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, Costa Rica's Paulo Wanchope, Netherlands' Aron Winter and former Argentina defender Pablo Zabaleta.

The panel will be overseen by FIFA Senior Football Expert Pascal Zuberbühler and FIFA's Lead of Football Performance Insights, Tom Gardner. They will be supported by a team of football analysts, data scientists, data engineers and performance experts operating from Miami, Dallas and Manchester.

Addo's appointment places him among some of the most respected football minds in the game and underlines FIFA's confidence in his technical expertise and understanding of elite-level football.

His selection came just weeks after his tenure as Ghana coach ended following disappointing friendly results against Austria and Germany in March. Despite the criticism that followed those defeats, Addo successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the tournament, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia in their quest to progress to the knockout stages.
