2026 World Cup: GFA seek fifth friendly as Carlos Queiroz era begins as Black Stars coach

The Black Stars could line up a fifth international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) intensifying efforts to fine-tune preparations under new head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Ghana had initially scheduled four warm-up matches following their qualification for the tournament. Those plans were drawn up during Otto Addo’s tenure, which ended after back-to-back defeats to Austria (5-1) and Germany (2-1) in March.

The Portuguese tactician has since been replaced by Queiroz on a short-term contract, subject to review after the World Cup. The experienced coach is expected in Ghana this week for his official unveiling alongside five members of his technical team.

According to reports, the GFA is now exploring the possibility of adding an extra friendly to the calendar, believing the current schedule—featuring matches against Mexico and Wales in May and June—may not be sufficient for Queiroz to fully imprint his tactical philosophy ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Officials are expected to formally introduce the new coach to Sports Minister Kofi Adams as part of his arrival programme.

Queiroz will take charge of the team’s preparations leading into the remaining friendlies, with Ghana set to face Mexico before concluding their warm-up games against Wales on June 2.

The Black Stars will make their fifth World Cup appearance in Group L, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz brings a wealth of World Cup experience, having guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 edition, led Portugal to the Round of 16 in 2010, and taken Iran to consecutive tournaments in 2014 and 2018. His appointment is widely viewed as a move aimed at restoring stability and improving Ghana’s performance on the global stage after early exits in 2014 and 2022.
