The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a weather alert warning of widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across parts of the country as rain-bearing systems currently affecting Nigeria and Benin move westward into Ghana.
According to GMet's latest 24-hour weather forecast, which is valid from 6:00 p.m. on June 10, 2026, mostly cloudy conditions are expected across the country this evening, with weather conditions likely to worsen as the advancing storm systems enter Ghana.
The agency indicated that the weather pattern is expected to trigger thunderstorms and rainfall of varying intensity from the evening into the night, increasing the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.
GMet warned that strong winds could precede the storms, posing potential threats to property and outdoor activities. It also cautioned that flash floods may occur in low-lying areas, particularly in communities with poor drainage systems, saturated soils, and choked waterways.
The forecast shows a high likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by rain in several major towns and cities, including Accra, Kasoa, Ho, Koforidua, Kumasi, Obuasi, Sunyani, Techiman, and Aflao during the evening hours. Parts of the middle and northern sectors are also expected to experience thunderstorms and rainfall before conditions gradually improve later in the night.
By Thursday morning, mist or fog patches are expected over coastal, forest, and mountainous areas, which could reduce visibility for motorists and other road users.
In the Greater Accra Region, Accra and Kasoa are forecast to experience thunderstorms and rainfall this evening, while coastal towns such as Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Axim may also record rainfall activity.
GMet has advised the public, particularly residents of flood-prone communities, to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautionary measures as the unstable weather system moves across the country.
The agency also noted that sea conditions remain rough and urged fishermen, canoe operators, and other marine users to exercise caution.
The advisory comes as many parts of Ghana continue to experience seasonal rainfall associated with the peak of the major rainy season, with meteorologists closely monitoring weather developments across the West African sub-region.
