Former Ghana international Michael Essien has cautioned that the Black Stars face a stern challenge at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing their group as highly competitive following the official draw.
Speaking to FIFA, the former midfield powerhouse reacted to Ghana’s placement in Group L alongside European heavyweights England and Croatia, as well as Panama.
Essien, who featured for Ghana at two World Cup tournaments, acknowledged the quality of the opposition but stressed the importance of discipline and efficiency if the team is to progress beyond the group stage.
He pointed out that the unpredictable nature of tournament football could still work in Ghana’s favour, provided the team remains focused on one match at a time.
"That's a tough group. But there's always tough games to play, and it's up to you to win them. They should take every game as it comes and do their best," Essien said.
"It's a tournament; anything can happen. You just have to make sure you win your games and keep moving. Let's see what they can do," he added.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England in a high-profile encounter on June 23. The Black Stars will wrap up their group stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains within the camp, with Ghana currently without a head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to name a replacement in the coming days, just weeks before the tournament kicks off.
