Residents and businesses in several parts of the Greater Accra Region are expected to experience a 15-hour power outage on Sunday, August 23, 2026, as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) undertakes critical work to replace a transmission tower damaged by a tanker explosion.

The planned interruption will affect parts of the Accra West and Accra East operational areas of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Power supply is expected to be interrupted from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to enable GRIDCo’s engineers and technical teams to safely complete the replacement of the damaged tower and restore the affected transmission line.

The tower is located around Ashaiman on the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line.

Areas to Experience Outage
In the Accra West operational area, affected communities include James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Sempe, parts of Kaneshie, North Industrial Area, Okaishie, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, Adabraka, parts of Ridge, Tesano, Santana Market, parts of Alajo, Malam Atta Market, Asylum Down and surrounding communities.

The Accra East area will also be affected, with the outage covering Nima Township, Kanda Highway, Kanda Estate, Kokomlemle, Sulana, Circle, Madina Township, Okponglo, Cantonment, Osu Oxford Street and adjoining communities.

GRIDCo explained that the planned interruption was necessary to facilitate the safe execution of the tower replacement works.

The company said it was coordinating with ECG to minimise the impact of the outage on customers and communities within the affected areas.

GRIDCo has apologised to residents and businesses for the inconvenience and appealed for their patience and cooperation while the critical work is being completed.
