Morocco cruise over Comoros to begin 2025 AFCON on a high

Morocco kicked off their bid for a first Africa Cup of Nations title in 53 years with a commanding 2–0 victory over Comoros in their Group A opener on Sunday night.

Playing before a buoyant home crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the Atlas Lions dominated proceedings but were initially frustrated in front of goal.

The Atlas Lions' best chance of the first half arrived in the 11th minute when Brahim Díaz was fouled inside the penalty area, only for Soufiane Rahimi’s spot kick to be brilliantly saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor. Despite sustained pressure, the hosts went into the break scoreless.

Morocco found the breakthrough shortly after the restart. In the 55th minute, Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz made amends by calmly finishing from close range after being set up by Noussair Mazraoui.

The hosts sealed the win in style when Ayoub El Kaabi produced a spectacular bicycle kick to double the advantage and put the result beyond doubt.

The victory places Morocco top of Group A with three points, while Comoros remain rooted at the bottom of the standings.

Walid Regragui’s side will next face Mali on Friday, December 26, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, while Comoros turn their attention to a crucial clash against Zambia at the Stade Mohammed V as they chase their first points of the tournament.
