The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituency has given the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) a 24-hour ultimatum to account for the distribution of fertiliser supplied through the Municipal Assembly.
The party alleges that 250 bags of fertiliser cannot currently be accounted for and has raised concerns over reports that some of the bags were diverted to political party members and the MCE's official residence.
The NPP says the allegations stem from a statement issued by the constituency secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which disclosed that 650 bags of fertiliser had been released to the party out of 6,000 bags requested for 1,500 applicants.
"We are therefore demanding immediate answers from the Municipal Chief Executive on the whereabouts of 250 bags of fertiliser, which credible sources allege cannot currently be accounted for," the party said in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5.
The NPP argued that fertiliser purchased with public funds is intended to support farmers and boost food production, and should not be used for partisan political purposes or private gain.
It has called on the MCE to disclose the total quantity of fertiliser received by the Municipal Assembly, the number of bags distributed, the identities of beneficiaries, the criteria used for the distribution and the whereabouts of the alleged missing bags.
"Should the MCE fail to satisfactorily account for the fertiliser within the stated period, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri NPP Communications Directorate will formally petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and all other relevant state investigative institutions to conduct a full, independent investigation into the matter," the statement stressed.
