'Enough of the intimidation' — Prince David Osei joins 'Democracy Under Attack' demonstration

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has announced his support for the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) planned "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration, saying he will join the nationwide protest on Thursday, August 6.

The NPP has organised the demonstration in collaboration with other political parties and civil society organisations, citing concerns over what it describes as threats to Ghana's democracy and the rule of law.

The party says the protest follows the Court of Appeal's acquittal of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu and what it describes as selective justice by the government.

The NPP has also alleged that some of its members have been arrested over comments they made, while members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) who allegedly made similar remarks have not faced the same treatment.

In a social media post on Wednesday, August 5, Prince David Osei said he was joining the demonstration because he believes citizens must be free to express their views without fear.

"Our voices will never be silenced. We are not afraid. True democracy is what we seek as a nation," he wrote.

The actor, who has long sympathised with the NPP also criticised what he described as the intimidation of citizens for exercising their constitutional rights and called on Ghanaians to defend the country's democratic values.

"Enough of the intimidation and arrests of citizens for exercising their constitutional rights. Ghana, wake up! Stand up for justice, freedom, and the principles that unite us," he stated.

The "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration is expected to begin at the Supreme Court at 5:00 a.m. before participants march to the Jubilee House to present petitions over issues the organisers say threaten Ghana's democratic governance.
