PNP joins NPP's 'Democracy Under Attack' demonstration

The People's National Party (PNP) has announced that it will participate in the New Patriotic Party's planned "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration scheduled for Thursday, August 6.

The party says its decision is based on the need to defend Ghana's democracy, uphold the rule of law and protect the constitutional rights of all citizens regardless of their political affiliation.

The demonstration, which is being organised by the NPP together with other political parties and civil society organisations, is intended to protest what organisers describe as growing threats to democracy, selective justice and freedom of expression.

"Our decision is guided by our unwavering belief that democracy must guarantee equal justice, freedom of expression, and equal protection under the law for every Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation," the PNP said in a statement signed by its Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla.

The party expressed concern over what it described as increasing perceptions of selective justice, alleging that cases involving opposition members are pursued more aggressively than similar allegations involving persons associated with the governing party.

It also raised concerns about what it believes is the intimidation of women who exercise their constitutional right to free expression, arguing that such developments undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

"The defence of democracy is not about protecting any political party. It is about protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms of every Ghanaian," the statement added.

The PNP said it stands with all Ghanaians who believe justice must be applied fairly and impartially and stressed that democracy can only thrive when the rule of law is upheld without discrimination.
