President of New Edubiase United, Abdul Salam Yakubu, has stepped down from his position at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in protest against the recent extension of the presidential term limit.
Yakubu, a long-time critic of the Kurt Okraku-led administration, was only months ago appointed Chairman of the GFA’s U-19 Elite Championship Management Committee.
However, following last week’s Congress decision to extend the GFA presidency from two to three terms, he tendered his resignation on Monday.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Yakubu explained that he had made his stance on the issue clear before accepting the role.
"I initially turned down an approach from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to work with them.
"I had my own reasons, and we all know ahead of the elections in 2019, I was supporting George Afriyie so I did not want to betray him but this time around, Kurt Okraku, who is the president of the GFA, personally called me for this work but I made my stands clear that if this third term in office is accepted by Congress, I will resign and I have done exactly that.
"I am grateful for everything, but I cannot continue my work as the Chairman of the Elite Championship," he added.
At the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress, held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, 114 of the 124 members present voted in favour of the constitutional amendment.
The decision has since triggered heated debate within the Ghanaian football community, with stakeholders sharply divided over its implications.
