Former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor says Ghana have the quality to go all the way at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but insists their chances will depend heavily on how they begin the tournament.

Ghana will compete at the Mundial, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Speaking in an interview, Akonnor said an opening victory would be crucial in setting the tone for the campaign.

"Ghana winning the World Cup is possible, but the most important thing is for us to win our first game," the former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko gaffer told Akoma FM.

"Our first match is very important for a strong start, and the goal is to win it. Once we do that, knowing Ghana, we will build momentum and improve from there. But it is crucial we start well because after that, we will see things flying high."

Akonnor, who now works as Gor Mahia head coach, expressed strong faith in the current squad, adding that his continued support is rooted in his belief in their potential.

"I have a lot of belief in this team, which is why I'm supporting them. I know they can achieve something special," he added.

He also highlighted Ghana’s growing pedigree on football’s biggest stage, noting that the 2026 tournament will mark the country’s fifth World Cup appearance.

"Ghana has come a long way. This will be our fifth World Cup appearance. By now, we should be confident in what we are doing, regardless of the opponent we face," Akonnor stated.

Ghana begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before taking on England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final Group L fixture is against Croatia on June 27.

The Black Stars, coached by Carlos Queiroz, will be aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2010.
