Ghanaian goalkeeper Joseph Anang, who has been a teammate of Mohammed Kudus, is on the verge of departing West Ham United as his contract comes to an end on June 30.
Anang, 23, embarked on his journey with the Premier League club back in 2017, transitioning from a promising teenager to a member of the senior squad, despite primarily serving as a backup.
Beginning his football career in Ghana with Danbort FC, Anang briefly featured for the now-defunct Ghana Premier League side Wa All Stars before making his way to England at the age of 17 to join West Ham's academy. His developmental path included loan spells at Stevenage, St. Patrick’s Athletic, and Derby County, before returning to West Ham.
While part of the West Ham roster that secured victory in the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, Anang did not see any playing time on the field.
After a seven-year tenure with the club, the goalkeeper is now poised to bid farewell upon the expiration of his contract. West Ham officially confirmed Anang's departure alongside defender Angelo Ogbonna in a club statement.
The statement noted, "West Ham United can confirm that Angelo Ogbonna and Joseph Anang will leave the Club when their respective contracts expire on 30 June 2024."
"Anang, a promising young goalkeeper, concludes his seven-year stint with the Club. Hailing from Ghana, Anang made the leap to London as a teenager and turned professional in 2018. During his tenure, he gained valuable experience with loan spells at EFL clubs Stevenage and Derby County. He also showcased his talent for Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic during the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying rounds in 2022. Anang, who has represented England at the U20 level, has been an integral part of the West Ham squad, featuring in over 30 first-team matchday squads, including six during West Ham's UEFA Europa Conference League triumph last season."
The statement concluded with West Ham extending gratitude to both Angelo and Joseph for their contributions and wishing them the best in their future endeavours.
Anang, who has represented England at the U20 level, remains eligible to represent Ghana if he chooses to switch national allegiance.
