US Cremonese forward, Felix Afena-Gyan, has rejected the privilege to play for Ghana’s Black Meteors in its upcoming U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria.
The player was one of eight foreign-based players called up by head coach Ibrahim Tanko for the fixture. However, despite the Ghana Football Association sending all the necessary travel requirements to the Italian side where Afena-Gyan currently plays, the player has chosen not to join the team.
The 21-year-old forward is yet to be involved in any national team assignment since his appearance in an international friendly against Brazil before the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This season, Afena-Gyan has started just five Serie A games and has scored two goals in three Coppa Italia appearances.
The Black Meteors is seeking to qualify for the main U23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, and this latest development could be a blow to their efforts. It is unclear why Afena-Gyan has chosen not to join the team, but it is expected that the Ghanaian Football Association will seek clarification from the player in due course.
