Human activities destroying water bodies - WRC

Daboase, Oct. 3, GNA - Participants at a day's workshop organized by the Water Resource Commission, have identified inhuman activities as the main factor destroying most of the country's water bodies.

Currently most of Ghana's water bodies are left without aquatic live due to galamsey activities and the emission of poisonous chemicals in them.

Mr Dominic Sowah, member of the Commission, who gave an overview of the current situation at Daboase in the Western Region, said most of the country's rivers have moved from a classification of "fairly good to a very poor water quality."

He said the situation, if not checked, would make access to water very costly in the near future.

Mr. Anthony Aggrey, District Chief Executive for Mpohor Wassa East, said the destruction of the Pra River in the area, continued to be a major source of worry, and called on stakeholders to rectify the situation.

He said feasibility studies to turn the River into a hydro-electric generation dam was completed and the project would soon begin. GNA EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE
