A man who assaulted a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema has been convicted and fined 100 penalty units by the Community 22 District Court.
The court also ordered the convict, Desmond Bosomtwe, to pay GHS 5,000 in compensation to the complainant, Nurse Priscilla Addo. He has further been barred from entering the health facility for 12 months, effective Tuesday, June 9, the date of judgment, and was also made to sign a bond of good behaviour.
Speaking to Citi News after the ruling on Tuesday, the Deputy National Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Philemon Gyapong, said the association had expected a harsher punishment to deter similar incidents, but would respect the court’s decision.
“He was made to sign a bond of good behaviour. He’s to pay compensation of GHC5,000 to the midwife. The judiciary has acted timeously, and that is what we expected.
“We had hoped the gentleman would receive a stiffer punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. But that is what the law says; we accept it,” he said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when senior staff midwife Priscilla Addo, who was on duty, informed visitors that official visiting hours had ended and asked them to leave the ward to ensure a calm and conducive environment for patients, in line with hospital protocols.
However, Desmond Bosomtwe, a relative of a patient, reportedly refused to comply. The disagreement escalated into a confrontation that resulted in him physically assaulting the midwife, an act captured on video and widely circulated.
