Empower Playgrounds, a non-governmental organisation concerned with promoting education amongst deprived areas have come to the rescue of Mpaem M/A Basic School at Mpaem near Suhyen in the New Juaben North Constituency of the Eastern Region.

The NGO, through the request of the MP for the area, Nana Agyei Akwasi Boateng, donated a playworld system facility to the school to help in the production of solar electricity for the school which is currently not on the national grid.

The $10,000 facility also came with 40 pieces of solar lamps which would be powered by the playworld system (also known as Mary Go Round).

The Country Director of Empower Playgrounds, Darko Mensah, during a short presentation ceremony at the school on Monday said, 'As the children play with the facility, energy is generated, and this situation allows room for fun as well.'

He was optimistic that the facility would increase enrolment and further improve teaching and learning at the school.

He urged that any technical fault should be reported to his outfit for prompt response.

Darko Mensah also stressed that Empower Playgrounds would invest more resources in the school if they achieve the needed results.

The MP was very grateful to Empower Playgrounds. He charged the school authorities to ensure that the solar lamps would be effectively used for the intended purpose.

The lamps, which would be powered in the school, would be taken home by the school children to help them have group studies at night especially in doing their home work.

The MP said parents should, therefore, not deprive their children access to the lamps or use it for their domestic purposes like lightening their kitchen amongst others.

He said the donation was a beacon of hope and an opportunity to place the children at par with their peers studying in towns where there was electricity.

The Headmaster of the school, Osei Mireku, was very excited about the facility. He appealed to the MP to help construct a JHS block for the school, to help deal with its infrastructure challenges.

The lamps were received by the Ghana Education Service (GES) Circuit Supervisor, Henry Sintim, on behalf of the school.

So far, the 256 pupils have been divided into a group of four and six with a lamp each to begin the evening studies at the house of the group leader.

The solar-generating 'Mary Go Round' at the Mpaem M/A Basic School is the 36 th of its kind, forming part of the donations made by Empower Playgrounds to the many deprived communities across the country
