Dont Link Me To Kumasi Killings -NAPO

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has refuted allegations that Kwadwo Asamoah, one of the men who was shot dead in Kumasi on Wednesday afternoon, was his bodyguard.

Two men – Kwadwo Asamoah and Victor Okrah – were shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon in Ashtown, a suburb of Kumasi, by unknown assailants.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command and many in Kuamsi have linked the shooting to a shooting incident which occurred during Mr. Opoku Prempeh's campaign in the area in December, 2012.

However, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the MP for Manhyia denied the allegations, saying: 'It is an allegation that has been peddled by the Regional Police Command in Kumasi for some time that they have not been able to substantiate. I don't know him personally, and he is not my bodyguard.'

According to him, there was no relation between the shooting and the door-to-door campaign he did during the build up to the 2012 general elections.

'I went to the police station and gave a report, and other bystanders also gave a report to the police that I, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, was nowhere near where the incident happened, but yet still, the police decided that that is the best way to give it prominence and see how effective they [Police] are trying to be.'

Mr. Opoku Prempeh said Wednesday's incident had no link to a political assassination and himself.

He further said the police administration had failed to address conclusively all the incidences of shooting in Kumasi. 'Maybe Kumasi has become too large for the police to look after.'

Meanwhile, the police in the Ashanti Region are on the hunt for the killers of two men in Ashtown in the Manhyia South constituency.

In an interview with the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Tanko, he said investigations were being conducted into the matter.

'We have deployed men in the Ashtown vicinity, and they are patrolling, while we are trying very hard to get information that will lead us to the perpetrators of the act.'
