The Assemblyman for the Aflive/Alorkpem and Azizakpey Electoral Area, Honourable Evans Lawer Adusu, has commended the swift intervention by the Member of Parliament for Ada East, Hon. Comfort Doeyo Cudjoe Ghansah, who also serves as the First Deputy Majority Whip of the NDC, and the District Chief Executive, Hon. Kennedy Kabu Kofi Kanor, for responding promptly to the plea of island communities for the restoration of solar power.

The restoration became necessary after a foreign contractor disconnected the solar system due to non‑payment of contractual arrears, which should have been settled by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration before leaving office in 2024.

For nearly a month—from early May to June 2026—the people of Aflive, Alorkpem, and Azizakpey were plunged into darkness after the contractor shut down the solar panels that power the largest island community in the Greater Accra Region, Pediatorkope. The blackout severely affected economic activities and daily life for residents.

According to the Assemblyman, several appeals were made by him and the affected communities. Their persistent calls to the MP and the DCE eventually led to high‑level negotiations involving the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, resulting in the full restoration of solar power to the islands. The residents, many of whom were previously affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage, expressed immense relief and gratitude.

In an exclusive interview, Hon. Evans Lawer Adusu revealed that the shutdown had significantly disrupted business operations, as most residents were unaware of any outstanding contractual payments owed by the former government.

He expressed profound appreciation to the MP and the DCE for their rapid response in resolving the crisis, describing the restoration as a major relief to the island communities.

Hon. Adusu further disclosed that beyond the power issue, he has begun installing school signboards for all basic schools within his electoral area—Aflive, Alorkpem, and Azizakpey—to enhance visibility and support educational development.

He also appealed to the MP and the DCE to work towards connecting the island communities to the national ECG grid to prevent future outages and ensure stable, long‑term electricity supply.
