My Appointment Shows NPP Has The Youth At Heart - Nitiwul Says

Member of Parliament for the Bimbila Constituency and newly appointed Deputy Minority leader, Dominic Nitiwul has said the NPP's decision to make him the Deputy Minority leader shows the party position of the party on youth in leadership.

“This goes to show the thinking of the party at this crucial time in our history that since 1992, they will decide to make someone below the age of 36 as the deputy minority leader. It is a huge responsibility and also a message being sent clearly to the youth of this country that if you are competent, it does not matter your age or where you come from, you will be rewarded,” he stated.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Hon Nitiwul said he believes that the decision was a unanimous one judging from the enthusiasm of his colleagues who were at the meeting.

“If I'm to listen to what my colleagues in parliament say and the feeling at the meeting, I would say it was a unanimous decision and I know anyone in the party will applaud the decision. It goes to show that the NPP has the young people at heart,” he stated.

He however rubbished reports that the NPP deliberately rewarded Northern MPs for their role in helping the party win as many as ten seats in the region which was unprecedented.

“I was the deputy Campaign Manager of The Region and I do not think that was the yardstick. I can assure you that that is not what the party used. They wanted to change the face of the party and thus brought someone the youth can identify with” he said.

Hon Nitiwul further disclosed, “If even the region has done well and the party is rewarding it, so be it. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. We are going to work hard and keep explaining our policies to the people of the north and I'm sure we will move from the current ten to 15 or 20”.

He also demised reports that the incumbent Minority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu's position was under threat with competition from other members.

“As a leader, there will always be people who will hold alternate views but once the decision is taken by the party to maintain Osei Kyei Mensah and pick Dominic Nitiwul and Dan Botwe as the chief whip then everyone else falls into line”.

“There were people who thought Osei Kyei Mensah had done well as a Minority leader and should therefore be maintained and at the end of the day, the party knew that was the best decision to keep the party together because the most important thing is unity in the party. This is just a means of trying to ensure we move on as a party and revamp parliament and make sure we get what we are looking for,” he added.
