Netherlands Salvation Army supports school projects at Chantan

Accra, Aug. 1, GNA - The Netherlands Salvation Army has supported the construction of a three-classroom block and an office for the Salvation Army Kindergarten and Primary school at Chantan, a suburb of Accra.

It is being financed by the Salvation Army in Ghana in collaboration with the Netherlands Salvation Army.

Mr Huub Stijvers, Technical Leader for the Netherlands Salvation Army in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the project was part of their social work to support local communities to improve education in the country.

He said as part of their commitment they were engaged in providing labour with the assistance of students of the World Servant, a non-governmental organisation in Netherlands.

Mr Stijvers said the project was scheduled to be completed within three weeks, adding that the Salvation Army was an integral part of the Christian Church, although distinctive in government and practice.

He noted that the Army's doctrine followed the mainstream of Christian belief and its articles of faith which emphasized God's saving purposes.

Its objectives were to the advancement of the Christian religion in terms of education, poverty reduction, and other projects beneficial to society.

Mr Samuel A. Obeng, Projects Assistance for Salvation Army-Netherlands Educational Projects said the project was necessary because of the abolition of the shift system in the country.

He said the abolition of the shift system had created difficulty in relocating some of the pupils and the project would help address the problem.
