GES steps up efforts at strengthening special education

Offinso (Ash), July 27, GNA - The Ghana Education Service (GES) as part of efforts at addressing the learning needs of children with disability has held a five-day trainers workshop on the “Inclusive Education (IE) and screening programme.

In attendance were 50 special education coordinators drawn from the Afram Plains District in the Eastern Region, Garu-Tempane in Upper East, Savelugu-Nanton in Northern, Lambussie-Karni in Upper West and Komenda-Eguafo-Abirem in the Central Region.

The IE is an approach that seeks to tackle the special needs of vulnerable and marginalized school children and was sponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Ms Rosemond Blay, Director in-charge of Special Education Division of the GES, said a total of 529 co-coordinators from 34 districts in eight regions had so far benefitted from the training.

She said international laws, policies and treaties had influenced the country's IE programme. Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, said it was totally unacceptable to deny any school-going age child of quantity education, since that amounted to “violation of the child's right.”

He labeled the IE as noble and laudable and appealed to all to assist to make it successful.
