The country inn is an icon of the United Kingdom, and some of the best are located in the intensely green counties an hour or two west of London.

Three Horseshoes Country Inn:
Just 40.2km from London, in the Chiltern Hills, this six-room inn dating back to 1745 has a traditional pub filled with hikers during the day. At night, guests enjoy sophisticated country dishes like roast lamb with kale. (Courtesy of Three Horseshoes Country Inn)

The Hand and Flowers:
This pub with cottage rooms, in the town of Marlow, is a two-Michelin-starred restaurant that serves dishes like salt-cod-wrapped Scotch eggs and beef fillet with béarnaise sauce. (Courtesy of The Hand and Flowers)

The Olde Bell:
Elizabeth Taylor was a regular at this 800-year-old pub in Hurley, one of a family of modern coaching inns 45 minutes from central London. Chef Warren Geraghty packs picnic lunches for guests to take to the nearby River Thames. (Nick Seaton)

Barnsley House:
This estate's extensive gardens are incredible, with landscaped lawns, meadows and topiaries right in the centre of the Cotswold village, a 90-minute drive from West London. Chef Graham Grafton makes English-Italian food at the restaurant, like smoked haddock and pea risotto. (Mark Bolton)

The Pig:<
Rooms are named for pig breeds at this shabby-chic inn in Hampshire's New Forest National Park, a 90-minute drive from London. Chef James Golding's menu follows the porcine theme, with a section of “piggy bits”, like pork crackling with crab apple sauce. (Courtesy of the Limewood Group)
