The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. William (Billy) Williams has announced that Australia would provide St Francis' of Assisi Girls Senior High School (SHS) at Jirapa, the only girls' school in the Upper West Region with GH¢30,000 for the construction of Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre.
The funds will be used to purchase computers and other ICT equipment for the school.
This came to light when the Mr. William Billy paid a courtesy call on the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Issahaku Salia. He told the Regional Minister that 'The Australian Government places a high priority on supporting education. ICT knowledge is increasingly necessary for the job prospects of young people.
'However, we know that all over the world, female students are often left behind when it comes to science and technology. I am therefore glad to announce Australia's partnership with the St Francis Girls Senior High School and the Jirapa District Assembly for the establishment of this important project.'
Last year, Australia, in partnership with the Concern Universal, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), provided GH¢ 56,667 for the implementation of a shea-butter processing project at Gabile in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region.
As a result, 250 women in eight villages now have skills in shea- butter processing, record keeping and marketing. This enables them to make market contacts with cosmetics companies in Accra, thereby enhancing their businesses and families.
Australia also partnered with Australian gold mining company, Azumah Resources Ltd. in 2011, to initiate a permaculture project (a system of agriculture that uses a mix of trees, bushes, other perennial plants, and livestock to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that yields crops and other products) to train and construct demonstration farm in the Nadowli District at the total cost of GH¢ 49,579.
