The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has handed over 141 confiscated firearms and 1,864 cartridges of ammunition to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons for marking and destruction.
The move forms part of efforts to prevent illegal weapons from re-entering circulation and to strengthen national security through responsible arms control measures.
The handover was announced by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons in a Facebook post on Thursday, June 11, 2026, highlighting ongoing collaboration among state institutions in combating the proliferation of illicit arms.
The seized weapons comprised 121 pump-action guns, 12 single-barrel shotguns, one double-barrel shotgun, two locally manufactured pistols, five military-style pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition and 1,864 cartridges.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing public safety and ensuring proper management of seized weapons.
A technical team led by Mohammed Gali Salam received the weapons on behalf of the Commission.
According to the Commission, the firearms will be marked and destroyed in accordance with established national procedures as part of its mandate to remove illicit, unserviceable and unauthorised weapons from circulation.
The Commission noted that the exercise demonstrates growing cooperation between security and regulatory agencies in efforts to curb the spread of illegal arms and strengthen public security across the country.
