The Accra File had earlier reported on how liquid waste is discharged into drains in the Metropolis, and this phenomenon seems to be increasing day in and day out.
Pieces of information picked up by the Accra File reveals that some individuals in the capital city engage in the bad habit of diverting their liquid waste into the main drains/gutters. This causes serious stench in some parts of the capital.
Mataheko, Sukura, Russia, Achimota Apenkwa, Bubiiashie and Laterbiokorshie are a few of such areas where this practice is taking place. Disposal of solid and liquid waste is a major challenge problem confronting the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Some residents the paper spoke to revealed that the stench emanating from such gutters are unbearable. They said the problem is more worrisome; especially when out door events are organized.
A shop owner at Mataheko, whose shop is adjacent to a gutter that smells very bad, told the paper that all efforts to get the landlord to correct the anomaly have proved futile. He said the health inspectors from the Ablekuma central sub metro have also not responded to the problem.
A tour around the Korle lagoon lavender hill area, where most of the city's liquid waste end up or are discharged pose a severe threat to the inhabitants.
When the File got to the area, a cesspit tank had been opened, and the raw liquid waste was being poured into the sea, after which sand is dug to cover the path created on the beach's sand by the liquid waste.
Checks with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) noted that finding a permanent site for both solid and liquid waste has been a major problem for the assembly.
The AMA acknowledged that the stench emanating from the lavender hill area, which stench is unbearable for the residents, would be addressed in the shortest possible time.
