Chereponi MP-elect looks back at road to victory

MP elect for Chereponi, Samuel Jabanyite of the National Democratic Congress has attributed his electoral victory to his long years of community service to the people in the constituency.

He garnered a total of 8,239 votes representing 51.25% to beat his closest contender Abubakari Aminu of the New Patriotic Party who had 7,416 representing 46.17% in a bye election held on Tuesday, 29th September, 2009.

The election was necessitated by the untimely death of Doris Seidu, who won on the ticket of the NPP in last year's election.

In an interview with Joy News' Dzifa Bampoe, a day after his victory, Mr Jabanyite said he was confident of a victory, albeit with a small margin.

He asserted that he is a popular candidate with a solid track record of community service and development oriented projects undertaken in the community.

“I have been a teacher in the community for some time now. I have been an Assembly man in the community for eight years,” he stressed.

He said his collaboration with international Non-Governmental Organisations like DANIDA and ActionAID Ghana whose projects imparted positively in the economic lives of the constituents could not be discounted.

“I am a commercial farmer, I own tractors and I farm large tracts of land for farms and do it on credit basis. As I speak with you now, this year alone I have farmed 3,500 hectares.

“The people know I am very popular and people know in my small way I have been able to touch people,” he said.
