The Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Ransford Tetteh, has given the assurance that the company will provide every flag bearer who files with the Electoral Commission adequate coverage to ensure free, fair and balanced electioneering this year.
He said the newspaper would provide every flag bearer with a permanent media team to cover their activities throughout the campaigning period.
He gave this assurance when officials of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) led by Mrs Augustina Akosua Akumanyin, Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, paid a working visit to the company yesterday.
The editor told the delegation that the Daily Graphic would play its part in the political process by being fair and balanced and also providing the kind of coverage that Ghana deserved.
He said the people of Ghana were the decision-makers and the media would only propagate political messages to inform society to enable them to make the right choices.
He said the Daily Graphic would avoid inflaming passions and expressed the hope that all political stakeholders would work hard to “save our country”.
“Elections or no elections we have to move on as a united country with a common goal,” he stated.
He gave the assurance that the Graphic Communications Group Limited would collaborate with the NCCE to ensure that this year's elections were conducted in an open, free and fair manner.
Mrs Akumanyi, who was in the company of Mr Papa Nketsia, Director of Public Affairs of NCCE, and Mr Albert Sam, also of the NCCE, said Civic Education was a shared responsibility.
She, therefore, called on all the political parties to play their part. She said politicians should try to stop people demanding money from them.
“Political parties must educate their members on the rules of elections and sort out problems from the grass roots,” she stated.
She pointed out that fortunately Ghana did not have tribal conflicts as it existed elsewhere even though citizens were tribally sentimental.
She said since every Ghanaian needed Ghana, it would not be fair for a political leadership to say that Ghana would burn if that party failed to win elections.
“If you are a politician you command respect in society so we should be mindful of what we say to bring the country together.” She emphasised.
