A newborn baby boy has been rescued after he was allegedly abandoned near an uncompleted building at Sombo in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.
The baby, who was found with his umbilical cord still attached, was reportedly struggling to breathe, with flies swarming around him in the bush.
Community members discovered the infant at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026, and rushed him to the Sombo Health Centre, where he is receiving medical attention.
The Assembly Member for the Sombo Electoral Area, Seidu Abubakari, said he rushed to the scene after receiving a telephone call about the discovery.
He said he observed what appeared to be the baby's footprints, alongside signs suggesting that the mother had struggled on the floor of the unfinished building before and after delivery.
According to Mr Abubakari, the circumstances at the scene also suggested that the woman might have been accompanied by another person.
He said the infant was subsequently taken to the Sombo Health Centre for treatment, while he contacted the police and environmental health officers to report the incident and facilitate investigations.
Mr Abubakari urged residents to remain vigilant and support efforts to protect vulnerable members of the community.
