Ghana Jollof case: High Court adjourns Salomey Bafoh's bail application to September 24

The High Court in Accra has adjourned the bail application of 40-year-old Salomey Awity Bafoh, a senior nursing officer based in Techiman who is facing a charge of abetment of crime over the alleged circulation of content linked to the “Ghana Jollof” social media account.

The application, which was scheduled for hearing on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, will now be heard on Thursday, September 24.

The adjournment followed a request by counsel for the Attorney-General, Karl Afedzie Forson, for additional time to enable the prosecution to prepare its response to the bail application.

Mr Forson told the court that he was not the substantive attorney assigned to the case and had only been informed that the A-G's office was served with the application on Friday, September 18.

He explained that Monday was a public holiday and the application had not yet been assigned to a substantive attorney.

“In the circumstance, we pray for a short adjournment so that we can respond formally to this application,” he said.

Counsel for Ms Bafoh, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, opposed the request, arguing that the application directly concerned his client's liberty.

He said there was evidence that the A-G's office had received the application and argued that the requirement for 3 clear days' notice applicable to some civil proceedings did not apply to the bail application.

According to him, further delay could effectively defeat the purpose of the application because the accused would have completed her 2-week remand period by the time the prosecution filed its affidavit in opposition.

Ms Bafoh is alleged by the prosecution to have acted as a liaison for Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof”, and to have assisted with the distribution of videos allegedly produced by Ms Kodua.

The prosecution further alleges that Ms Bafoh recruited other individuals to redistribute and circulate the videos across various social media platforms.

Ms Bafoh, who is listed as the second accused person, is currently outside the jurisdiction and has been declared wanted by the Police.

She has been charged with abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news, contrary to sections 20(1) and 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

She has pleaded not guilty and was remanded for 2 weeks while investigations continue.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court directed the A-G's office to file its affidavit in opposition by 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 24.

The judge noted that the matter involved the liberty of an individual and therefore ordered the prosecution to submit its response within the specified period.

The bail application was consequently adjourned to September 24, 2026.
