EOCO clarifies Nana Baffour Awuah's parliamentary immunity amid attempted arrest

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has explained that being a Member of Parliament does not automatically end an investigation or exempt a person from the application of the law.

The clarification follows an attempted arrest of the Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation.

EOCO, however, said it remained mindful of the constitutional privileges and protections enjoyed by Members of Parliament and would ensure that its actions complied with the Constitution and applicable laws.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” EOCO said. “At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution.”

The Office said its officers did not complete the attempted arrest after the situation escalated and they determined that continuing with the operation could pose a risk to public safety.

According to EOCO, the MP subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary.

The Office said Nana Baffour Awuah had also failed to honour 2 invitations issued to him in February 2026 to assist with the ongoing investigation.

EOCO said it recognised and respected the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations within the limits prescribed by the Constitution and relevant laws.
