EOCO says Manhyia South MP Baffour Awuah ignored two invitations for interrogation in February 2026

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed that its officers attempted to arrest the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the High Court complex on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation.

The agency said the operation was abandoned after the situation escalated and its officers determined that proceeding with the arrest could have endangered public safety.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, EOCO said its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory responsibilities following the MP's failure to honour 2 invitations issued to him in February 2026 to assist with the investigation.

According to the Office, it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law, with the attempted arrest forming part of those efforts.

The incident was captured on video by journalists at the High Court complex.

EOCO also disclosed that it had identified 2 persons who allegedly intervened during the incident and facilitated the MP's escape.

The agency said the conduct of the 2 individuals was being assessed based on the circumstances captured in the available video footage.

It added that it would take "such lawful steps as may be appropriate" after completing its assessment.

The Office further acknowledged that Nana Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to "seek sanctuary", although Parliament is currently on recess.

EOCO said it recognised and respected the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.

It stressed that membership of Parliament did not, by itself, terminate an investigation or place an individual "beyond the reach of the law".

At the same time, the Office said it would not take any action that was inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection guaranteed under the Constitution.

EOCO said the investigation remained active and that it would carefully review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday's incident, including available video evidence, before determining its next course of action.
