The three students who led the Greater Accra Region to victory in the 2026 Literacy Challenge have attributed their success to teamwork, collaboration and a deliberate effort to understand each other's strengths.
The winners said their preparation involved testing one another, sharing responsibilities and consulting on difficult questions, an approach they believe helped them stay composed and deliver under pressure during the final.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, September 7, the contestants reflected on the preparation that helped them navigate the competition and ultimately claim the title.
Jenelle-Abrielle Ofori, a member of the winning team from Silicon Valley International School, described the preparation period as one of the most enjoyable parts of the competition.
“The preparation for the quiz was my favourite part because I had a team to work with. It was interesting and very competitive. There was a lot of tension.”
For Neriah Gyamfi of North Ridge Lyceum, the team deliberately adopted a division-of-labour strategy to identify their individual strengths.
“We did division of labour, so we asked and tested ourselves to find out who was good at what to answer the questions as they came.”
The strategy meant each contestant could take greater responsibility for areas where they were strongest while still supporting the others when needed.
Otoo Sarah Augusta Akosua of Achimota Basic School said consultation remained central to their approach during the actual competition.
“When the question is asked, we discuss it before we answer it.”
That combination of preparation, consultation and teamwork helped Greater Accra maintain its composure through the final stages and eventually finish at the top of the standings.
The Greater Accra team secured 88 points in the final to beat Northern Region, which finished first runner-up with 85 points.
The victory earned the team a GH¢15,000 cash prize, the championship trophy, as well as gifts and souvenirs from the sponsors.
Northern Region received GH¢6,000, while Bono Region finished second runner-up with 68 points and received GH¢3,000.
For the Greater Accra contestants, however, the victory was not simply the result of individual brilliance. Their success demonstrated how preparation and collaboration could turn three students from different schools into a formidable team.
The competition was organised by Channel One TV in partnership with Citi FM and sponsored by Deli, Tema Oil Refinery, SIC Insurance, Prospectus Ghana and Advocate Publishing.
