The rich cultural heritage of the Ga people will once again reverberate beyond Ghana’s shores as His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, leads a high-powered traditional delegation to the Grand Homowo UK Festival 2026 in London.

The extraordinary cultural showcase, being organised by the GaDangme UK & Ireland, is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Wandsworth Civic Centre, Wandsworth High Street, London SW18 2PU, under the distinguished patronage of the Ga Mantse.

A statement signed by Manye Naa Tsotsoo Soyoo I and copied to the Modern Ghana News in Accra on Wednesday indicates that it will be the second time the Ga Mantse, accompanied by a retinue of chiefs, queen mothers, traditional leaders and elders of the Ga Traditional Council, will attend the festival in the United Kingdom, underscoring the growing global significance of Homowo.

Organisers say this year’s edition promises to be the most impactful yet, blending sacred tradition, historical reflection, and forward-looking development action.

Homowo, the centuries-old harvest festival of the Ga people of Accra, remains unique among Ghana’s festivals for its deeply sacred rites.

The London celebration will feature a majestic royal procession, vibrant cultural drumming and dance performances, Ga folk music, and the symbolic sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the traditional maize meal prepared only once a year to mark the triumph over hunger and famine.

This year’s festival holds special historical significance, as it marks 200 years since the Battle of Katamanso of 1826, a defining moment in Gold Coast history.

In recognition of the enduring peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups who participated in that historic event, the organisers have proposed the theme "Beyond Katamanso – 200 Years of Peaceful Co-Existence".

The theme is expected to spotlight unity, reconciliation and national cohesion, values that continue to define Ghana’s democratic and cultural identity.

Beyond celebration, the 2026 festival will assume a strong developmental character with the formal launch of the groundbreaking Homowo Hunger Alleviation Project Initiative (HHAPI).

Aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger – the HHAPI is the first initiative of its kind to channel the story, values and spirit behind Homowo toward practical hunger alleviation.

Organisers describe it as a determined move by the Ga people to translate culture and history into tangible interventions that improve the lives of Ghanaians at home and in the diaspora.

“The project moves Homowo beyond remembrance to responsibility,” a spokesperson for GaDangme UK & Ireland said, noting that it would support food security programmes and community livelihood initiatives.

The main festival will be followed by a Thanksgiving service and a business summit, creating a platform for Ghanaian businesses to pitch directly to UK-based investors and partners.

The summit is expected to strengthen trade, investment and diaspora economic linkages, positioning culture as a catalyst for enterprise and development.

Cultural analysts say the Grand Homowo UK Festival has evolved into a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy, fostering identity among second-generation Ghanaians in the diaspora while projecting Ghana’s heritage to a global audience.
